Storyboard hybrid rendering functionality places Crank Software into group of three finalists recognized for innovative software at Embedded World.

OTTAWA, February 19, 2020 - Crank Software, the embedded UI design and development solution of choice for UI-focused brands like John Deere and Coca Cola, announced this week that its UI development software, Storyboard, has been named as one of three finalists in the software category for an embedded 2020 award. Storyboard GUI design and development software accelerates the time to market for embedded teams creating brilliant smartphone-like user experiences on touch screen displays. Storyboard’s recent development of its hybrid rendering functionality, developed in late 2019 in collaboration with NXP® Semiconductors, formed a significant part of the award submission.

The embedded award is presented annually by organizers of the Embedded World exhibition and conference. The awards pay tribute to especially innovative products and developments that are unique and future oriented. A jury of eight industry experts will judge the entries and announce the winner at the 11:00 award ceremony on 25 February 2020 at Embedded World.

“We are honored that the embedded jury has shortlisted Crank for the embedded software category award,” said Brian Edmond, president and co-founder of Crank Software. “This nomination recognizes our unique expertise in helping teams build rich, graphical experiences that are applauded by their customers and envied by competitors. Smart, connected products have an increasing need for this.”

Hybrid rendering solves a recurrent challenge with low power devices. Increasingly sophisticated 3D graphics drain the battery life and force developers to skimp on features and functionality. With Storyboard, UIs now can utilize the 2D and 3D GPUs more efficiently, by dynamically assessing the content to be rendered, and automatically rendering that content using the most appropriate, power-optimized, GPU.

“The power efficient i.MX 7ULP allows for Storyboard to create a richer, faster UI by leveraging 3D hardware acceleration,” said Nik Jedrzejewski, i.MX Applications Processors Product Line Manager at NXP. “At the same time, Crank’s Storyboard recognizes that a 3D GPU is not always the right solution and it is more power efficient to use the separate 2D GPU for the acceleration of 2D graphics, providing higher 2D performance versus using the 3D GPU.  This recognition by Storyboard not only helps with graphics performance but also preserves the battery life of mobile products.”
